Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old medical system from India, means "knowledge of life" in Sanskrit. It promotes health through balanced living, natural therapies, and a holistic approach. Originating from India during the Vedic period around 1500 BCE, with early medical concepts found in the Atharva Veda. Its foundational texts include the Charaka Samhita by Charaka, focusing on internal medicine; the Sushruta Samhita by Sushruta, detailing surgical methods and tools; and the Ashtanga Hridaya by Vagbhata, which integrates ideas from both Charaka and Sushruta to provide a comprehensive view of Ayurvedic practices. Ayurveda has both influenced and been influenced by other traditional medicine systems in Asia, such as Chinese, Unani, and Tibetan medicine.
Core Principles of Ayurveda
Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhutas): Everything is made of space, air, fire, water, and earth.
Three Doshas: The elements form three bio-energies:
Vata (Space and Air): Governs movement and nerve impulses.
Pitta (Fire and Water): Governs metabolism and digestion.
Kapha (Water and Earth): Governs structure and fluid balance.
Seven Dhatus: Bodily tissues providing nourishment: plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, marrow/nerve tissue, and reproductive tissue.
Three Malas: Waste products: urine, feces, and sweat.
Agni (Digestive Fire): Crucial for metabolism and overall health.
